The Best Guidance Counselor

Trust in the Lord with all your heart

and lean not on your own understanding;

in all your ways submit to him,

and he will make your paths straight.

Proverbs 3:5-6 (NIV)

As I interacted with others at a recent Christian conference, God showered encouragement on me as they shared about His goodness in their lives. Drenched with these blessings, I took the “plunge” and shared His work as well. In one conversation with someone new to Christian School Guidance Counseling, I shared how God worked mightily during my time serving in that field years before. She asked what books helped me. As I thought of this, I decided to write this short post because we are ALL guiding someone in some way.

What did I find to be the best Christian Guidance Counseling resources?

The Bible:

I found God’s Word truly encouraging as I sought to help young people find personal, academic, and career answers. One can find a career; however, there is nothing more powerful than finding truth, direction, and rest on the sure foundation of His guidance manual for our lives: His Word. A job can evaporate tomorrow; His Word endures forever.

Good Christian Books:

Beyond the Bible, books by reputable, tried-and-tested Christian authors assisted me to assist others. Authors have studied subjects intricately, and this saves us much time and agony. Though we may have to adapt the resources to our situation, they are still relevant when based on the Bible and carefully researched. Books I found helpful are:

  1. The Christian Counselor’s Manual – Jay Adams
  2. The Christian Counselor’s New Testament and Proverbs – Jay Adams
  3. When People Are Big And God Is Small – Edward Welch
  4. A Homework Manual for Biblical Counseling – Wayne Mack
  5. Helps for Counselors: A Mini-Manual for Christian Counseling – Jay Adams
  6. The Ministry of the Christian School Guidance Counselor – James Deiuk
  7. The Guidance Manual for the Christian Home School – David and Laurie Callihan

Other Resources:

As Christians, we are never alone when facing anything because God has given us himself and others. As I looked around me to find the best resources for my students, God supplied other Biblical Counselors, Pastors, Parents, Websites, and other helps. Though it takes time and discernment to find the right people, building the right “team” is always worth it. Whenever we guide anyone, even ourselves, involving others helps immensely.

The Bible, tried-and-true Christian books, and other resources guided me as I guided others. God keeps His promises to direct us in all our problems, dreams, and needs of life (Proverbs 3:5-6). Because He is faithful, I am certain God will guide the new Guidance Counselor I mentioned above in her as she guides students. He IS the best Guidance Counselor (Isaiah 9:6, John 14:16).
