Certainty

The Lord is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble; and he knoweth them that trust in him.

  • Nahum 1:7

I would choose the word “uncertain” to describe our present day. We simply do not know much about this virus yet. We do not know when it will end. We do not know what the days will be like ahead. Everything seems uncertain, for sure.

In stark contrast, God’s character of certainty warms my mind from the frozen uncertainty of this world’s present trouble. God is certainly good. He is a certain refuge. And he certainly knows us – he created us!

While it is sad that trust has all but decayed these days, God’s good character is still certainly trustworthy and forever will be. Many must wisely take refuge in their homes to protect against infection; however, let’s remember our refuge is really to be in God. Having never broken his promises, our good God IS the truest example of certainty and hope for uncertain times.

Now faith is the certainty of things hoped for, a proof of things not seen.

– Hebrews 11:1 (NASB)

While it is sad that trust has all but decayed these days, God’s good character is still certainly trustworthy and forever will be.

Questions for Thought and Action:

1. What uncertainties are you facing today?

2. Despite those unknowns, what certainties about God can you deliberately call to mind today?

3. If you are having difficulty with this, then you are not alone, my friend. Trusting God in life’s unknowns isn’t humanly natural, nor easy. Thank God that our walk with God is not dependent on our human strength by itself! God knows this, and He truly cares. He will strengthen. He will carry!
