What 2 Timothy 1:7 Looks Like

For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. – 2 Tim. 1:7
What does this verse look like? How do we live out this verse? From the Bible, we see examples of living in the spirit of fear contrasted with its opposite – living in the Holy Spirit in the power, love, and self-discipline. Look at Peter for a vivid example.
The spirit of Fear: Peter, under the power of the spirit of fear, denied that he even knew Jesus (John 18:25-26). Peter, wracked with fear, turned his back on Jesus and turned to himself. However, Jesus never turned his back on Peter.
The Holy Spirit: Peter, in the power of the Holy Spirit, helped 3,000 people come to know Jesus (Acts 2). Even after Peter had surrendered to fear, Jesus never surrendered Peter. As He promised, Jesus later filled Peter and others with the Holy Spirit; then, Peter boldly proclaimed Jesus. In power, love, and a sound mind, Peter shares the Good News of Jesus.
What a difference in power! And what a difference in results!
If we are honest, we have all been Peter at some time. We have all struggled with the spirit of fear and lost. Yet, let’s be encouraged together today: Jesus loved Peter through failure and success, through sin and sainthood; likewise, he loves us and will help us move out from under fear and into his power, love, and sound mindedness.
Peter, wracked with fear, turned his back on Jesus and turned to himself. However, Jesus never turned his back on Peter.
Thank you for the wonderful reminder that even when we surrender to fear, Jesus never surrenders us. He is still willing to use us if we just turn to him. We don’t have to “return to him” just turn because he is always right there waiting for us.
Amen! His love never fails. His actions are not dependent on our performance and his faithfulness is above our faithfulness. I rejoice in the fact that He never leaves us or forsakes us.
Yes! Can’t be reminded of this too much .
Amen, Peggy! I need those constant reminders, especially of God’s grace. Thank God for His love and mercy!
